Frequently Asked Questions
* We try to help people by organising lifts from the airport or Arlon station. This is done in the week before summer school.
Before summer school: Lunch on the first Saturday is at 12.30 and the first session with all students and tutors starts at 13.30. It is advisable to get to Clairefontaine by 11.00 at the latest so that you can be shown your room, be shown around and have things explained.
Allow 90 minutes to get from the airport to Clairefontaine by public transport and then taxi.
After summer school: The final session on the last Sunday ends at 11.00. You will need to give yourself time to pack, clear your room and pay your bar bill after that. Lunch is served at 12.30. Lift sharing is often arranged to return students to Arlon station or the airport, but only after lunch.
If you arrive late, you will miss the tasters and voting and will therefore be allocated to an option group by the voting system. You will also miss the first class session which takes place after supper. If you arrive more than 1 day late, you might not be able to participate at summer school as you will have missed the essential early building blocks of your courses.
If you leave early, you will miss the culmination of your courses, as well as creating difficulties for your classmates who will have been working with you and cannot now complete that work.
We work from 09.00 in the morning until 21.00 at night—with breaks, of course, in between—but this doesn’t leave enough time to get to Luxembourg and back unless you have a car. On Thursday, the school takes a break from 13.00 until 09.00 on Friday morning. Although a picnic is organised, this is effectively free time for everyone.
Accommodation is simple but comfortable.
The standard (regular) package includes shared accommodation (twin beds) with a handbasin and built-in cupboards. Toilets are shared, as are showers. Both are equipped with cubicles for privacy. Students can nominate the person they would like to share with. Otherwise, the administrators will try to match people based on gender and age.
Some double rooms can be booked as a single for an additional fee, but the number is limited so this is subject to availability.
There are also a limited number of single rooms with an ensuite (private) shower and toilet, as well as 2 double rooms, all for an additional fee, and subject to availability.
For a slightly lower fee, 5 multi-bed rooms are available. These are mostly equipped with bunkbeds and have shared toilets and showers (both with cubicles).
This is done at Clairefontaine, on the first afternoon. Each tutor gives a short ‘taster’ class of their options in Projects 1 and 2, students vote for an option in the first project, and then, after the results are published, vote for an option in the second project.
Generally no. In a particular course, the tutor might ask students to prepare something. In this case, the tutor will contact them directly, before summer school.
The application forms allow you to state your dietary preference from:
If you have more complex needs (for instance food allergies), please state this on the form. The Clairefontaine staff will do their best to accommodate your needs, but they cannot be guaranteed.
We have use of a small kitchen with a microwave and a fridge where students can store their own food.
